RIKEN KEIKI GX-9000 – Advanced CO₂ & Multi-Gas Detection for IMO MSC.581(110) Enclosed-Space Safety

RIKEN KEIKI GX-9000 is a professional portable multi-gas detector designed for atmospheric monitoring in demanding marine, oil & gas, petrochemical, industrial, and enclosed-space applications.

With support for simultaneous detection of up to six gases, the GX-9000 can be configured to detect carbon dioxide (CO₂) together with other gases relevant to the application, providing operators with a comprehensive portable atmospheric monitoring solution.

The importance of reliable CO₂ monitoring has increased with the publication of IMO Resolution MSC.581(110), adopted by the IMO Maritime Safety Committee on 27 June 2025. The resolution provides revised recommendations for entering enclosed spaces aboard ships and includes CO₂ concentration guidance as part of atmospheric assessment.

The IMO document identifies normal outdoor CO₂ concentrations at approximately 250–400 ppm, while concentrations of 5,000 ppm (0.5%) are identified as a workplace exposure limit as an 8-hour TWA in most countries. Higher concentrations are associated with increasing health and safety concerns.

The GX-9000 provides a practical portable solution for measuring CO₂ and other selected gases during enclosed-space entry preparation, tank atmosphere checks, shipboard inspections, maintenance activities, and industrial gas monitoring.

Core Working Principle

The RIKEN KEIKI GX-9000 uses a suction-type sampling system to draw an atmospheric sample into the detector. Depending on the installed sensor configuration, the instrument uses different detection principles including Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) for applicable gases such as CO₂, potentiostatic electrolysis, catalytic, thermal conductivity, and photo-ionization technologies.

For a CO₂-equipped configuration, the detector measures the concentration of carbon dioxide in the sampled atmosphere and displays the measurement on the instrument.

The GX-9000 can measure up to six different gas concentrations simultaneously, depending on the selected configuration. Available target gases include CO₂, O₂, CO, H₂S, combustible gases, NH₃, Cl₂, O₃, SO₂, HCl, HCN, VOCs and other supported gases.

The detector provides gas alarms and fault alarms, with alarm indication through a flashing lamp, buzzer, and flashing gas-concentration display.

RIKEN KEIKI GX-9000: CO₂ & Multi-Gas Monitoring for Enclosed-Space Safety

The RIKEN KEIKI GX-9000 is a professional portable multi-gas detector developed for reliable atmospheric monitoring across marine, petrochemical, industrial, and infrastructure applications.

The instrument is capable of detecting up to six gases simultaneously, depending on the selected sensor configuration. Its available gas lineup includes CO₂, O₂, CO, H₂S, combustible gases, VOCs, NH₃, Cl₂, O₃, SO₂, HCl, HCN and other gases.

For marine enclosed-space operations, a suitable configuration can combine CO₂ with oxygen, combustible gas and toxic-gas sensors, allowing operators to assess multiple atmospheric hazards using one portable instrument.

This capability is particularly relevant to enclosed-space safety because a safe atmosphere cannot be determined from oxygen concentration alone. Depending on the space and cargo or process history, personnel may also need to consider CO₂, combustible gases, toxic gases and other atmospheric hazards.

IMO Resolution MSC.581(110), adopted on 27 June 2025, provides revised recommendations for entering enclosed spaces aboard ships. The resolution includes a table for carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentrations and associated danger levels.

The IMO document identifies 250–400 ppm as normal outdoor ambient CO₂ concentration and describes progressively higher concentrations, including 2,000–5,000 ppm, with 5,000 ppm (0.5%) identified as a workplace exposure limit as an 8-hour TWA in most countries. The GX-9000’s CO₂ measurement capability uses the appropriate sensor technology for the selected gas configuration. RIKEN KEIKI specifies Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) among the detection principles used in the GX-9000 platform. The detector’s built-in suction pump enables atmospheric samples to be drawn into the instrument through suitable sampling accessories. This is particularly useful when checking atmospheres in cargo tanks, ballast tanks, void spaces, pump rooms, enclosed compartments, cofferdams, machinery spaces, and other potentially hazardous locations, subject to the vessel’s approved procedures and equipment configuration.

The GX-9000 provides gas and fault alarms, with visual and audible warnings to alert operators when configured alarm conditions or instrument faults occur. The instrument is designed for demanding environments, with explosion-protected construction, IP66/68-equivalent protection and 1.5 m drop durability. The GX-9000 is also available with marine-related certifications depending on the exact specification, including MED and other approvals listed by RIKEN KEIKI. The applicable certification should always be verified against the exact model, sensor configuration and supplied certificate. For shipowners, ship managers, marine contractors and safety personnel, the GX-9000 provides a flexible platform for pre-entry atmospheric testing, continuous monitoring, tank inspection, maintenance operations, confined-space assessment, and multi-gas safety management.

Regular calibration, bump testing, sensor inspection, pump inspection, sampling-line checks, filter maintenance, battery checks and alarm verification should be carried out according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the vessel’s safety-management procedures.

The RIKEN KEIKI GX-9000 provides a comprehensive combination of CO₂ detection, multi-gas monitoring, pump-assisted sampling, multiple alarm functions, rugged construction and marine-compatible configurations, making it a suitable portable solution for professional enclosed-space and atmospheric safety monitoring.
